Title: All The Way Under Level: Q
Story Overview
Characters: Sonya age 9, Katie age 9, Uncle Jack, Aunt Lisa, Lqeguard
Setting:
D The
beach during the summer time
Plot:
D Katie invites
her cousin Sonya toy with her for a week over summer vacation. They are both
going into fourth grade in the fall. They loved riding bikes, playing games and
dancing to music. All that changed when Uncle Jack had the day off and wanted
to take the girls to the beach.
D Sonya tries to act happy that they are going to the beach. She had only taken
three swimming lessons. She was afraid to go all the way under the water.
D When the arrived, Aunt Lisa and Uncle Jack carried the umbrella and towels
and were looking for a good spot. Katie was ready to go swimming right away.
D Sonya thought of ways to avoid the water. “I could always hunt for seashells,
play in the sand, or chase birds. I could even buy ice-cream to eat. By that
time, it will probably be time to leave.”
C] Katie challenges Sonya to race to the water. Sonya notices the
“greenish-brownish rope”. She does not know it is seaweed.
C Katie touches the water and it is freezing! She tells Katie she needs to put
her beach towel down first.
C On her way back to her Aunt and Uncle, Sonya notices the lifeguard and
thinks, “That’s good, if I get into trouble, the lifeguard can save me.”
C Sonya sees her Uncle Jack putting on sunscreen and decides she will too.
Katie comes out of the water. Sonya was hoping Katie was done with the water.
1] Sonya suggested they build a sandcastle. Katie wants to go swimming.
C Sonya then suggests collecting sea shells. Katie asks Sonya if she is afraid
of the water.
C] Sonya said she was not afraid of the water. She stood up and glanced over to
make sure the lifeguard was still there and headed to the water.
C Sonya feels something wrap around her foot. She thinks it is an octopus. She
gets knocked down by a wave
C She feels someone pull her out of the water. Katie
pulls the seaweed from Sonya’s ankle and starts to laugh. Katie teases Sonya.
C Sonya thanks the lifeguard. The Lifeguard confides in Sonya that she used to
be afraid of water too. Sonya was surprised to hear this.
L] Lifeguard offers to show Sonya how to swim
after Sonya and the family goes for ice cream.
El Lifeguard teaches her how top her head under the water. Katy shows Sonya bow
to surf the waves.
El Sonya hopes that the uncle will take them back to the beach again
Problem:
El Sonya was embaffassed to admit that she did
not know how to swim.
Resolution:
El Lifeguard shares that she was afraid of water when she was Sonya’s age.
The Lifeguard then teaches Sonya how to put her head under water.
Enthng:
El Sonya hopes that Uncle Jack will take them back to the beach again.
